China’s Yichang Transportation Co. is to jointly develop a 100% electric-powered river sightseeing vessel with China Yangtze Power Co., Ltd. The total investment for this newbuilding project is around RMB90m ($13m).

The two companies inked a cooperation agreement to jointly research, develop and build a 100-meter, electric-powered vessel for Yangtze River day cruising.

Yichang Transportation will be responsible for ship design and construction, while China Yangtze Power will cover the battery and power system.

Zero emissions and engine noise

The newly developed electric-powered vessel will provide a better sailing experience with zero emissions and engine noise. It will further improve the company’s service ability and profitability, according to Yichang Transportation.

Yichang Transportation is a major passenger transportation industry player in China. The company currently owns five luxury river cruise vessels that operate in the Yangtze's Three Gorges area.

Yangtze River Three Gorges Cruise Center

In 2018, Yichang Transportation invested RMB6bn to develop the Yangtze River Three Gorges Cruise Center project. The center will be the homeport for the company’s river fleet, with a designed handling capacity of 2m passengers annually.
